Abstract

Med utgångspunkt från en fallstudie inom lungmedicin visar denna artikel hur ett biologiskt rastänkande med rötter i slaveriet lever kvar inom svensk medicin, trots den etablerade föreställningen att Sverige efter andra världskriget övergav rasbegreppet till förmån för ett sociokulturellt etnicitetsbegrepp, och trots omfattande internationell kritik mot algoritmer som korrigerar för ras. Genom analyser av intervjuer, kliniska riktlinjer, mjukvarumanualer, forskningsartiklar, kliniska prövningar och internationella standarder synliggör vi hur lungfunktionsmätningar bygger på antaganden om biologiskt grundade gruppskillnader i lungkapacitet, vilket påverkar bedömningen av individers hälsa. Vi visar också hur sociala och biologiska förklaringsmodeller sammanflätas på ett sätt som suddar ut gränsen mellan ras och etnicitet. Vi argumenterar för behovet av samhällsvetenskapliga analysverktyg som kan fånga in rasbegreppets töjbara och motsägelsefulla uttryck och som sätter i fråga föreställningen att biologiskt rastänkande enbart återfinns i högerextrema miljöer. Vi visar hur användningen av föråldrade och biologiserande kategoriseringar riskerar att reproducera ojämlik vård och bidra till felaktiga diagnoser, och vi varnar för de biopolitiska konsekvenser detta kan få i ett alltmer rasistiskt samhällsklimat.
