Artikeln undersöker teorival och kunskapssyn inom det miljösociologiska fältet mot bakgrund av de senaste årens valframgångar för klimat- och vetenskapsförnekande, högerpopulistiska partier. Det nya politiska läget påkallar en genomlysning av kunskapsteoretiska positioner i fältet. En central fråga är sättet på vilket de klimatvetenskapliga rönen ska integreras i sociologiska studier av klimatkrisen, antingen som en utgångspunkt eller som ett objekt för problematiseringar. En annan avvägning är den mellan risken för att antidemokratiska expertvälden ska legitimera sig med hänvisning till klimatnödläget och den motsatta risken för att allmänheten vilseleds och hålls okunnig om klimatförändringarnas orsaker och konsekvenser. Hur man ställer sig i dessa frågor är i hög grad avhängigt av om man förstår expertis som något grundat i ett substantiellt vetande om yttre sakförhållanden eller som en relationell, socialt tillskriven egenskap. Positionerna inom det miljösociologiska fältet tenderar att fördela sig mellan en naturvetenskaplig och/eller ekonomiskt-politiskt orienterad inriktning och en STS-inspirerad inriktning. Med hjälp av en närläsning av Rolf Lidskogs och Göran Sundqvists arbeten, två framträdande representanter för den senare inriktningen, undersöker artikeln kunskapsteoretiska antaganden och konfliktlinjer inom det miljösociologiska fältet. Syftet med artikeln är att klargöra de vägval som miljösociologin står inför i en tid av klimatnödläge, förtroendekris för expertisen och auktoritär populism.
