Sociological thinking for the Future: Sociologidagarna, Stockholm 18-20 March 2020
Call for papers
We are in the middle of a major social transformation. Societies face a number of contentious issues, including but not limited to: rising inequality, changing migration patterns, environmental degradation, accelerating globalization, rapid technological innovation, aging populations, new family formation patterns, conflicts over gender relations, an increase of precarious work, and political upheaval. Many of these developments have significant social repercussions, yet, they also open up new possibilities for change.
We motivate this conference by asking how we can use our sociological knowledge and sociological toolkit to better understand these changes and envision a new way forward. Many social science disciplines offer visions of the future, some optimistic while others dystopic. Is past sociological thinking still relevant, or do we need a more progressive form of sociology that radically changes our perceptions and beliefs about the preferred pathways to the future? How can we use our sociological imagination to develop new ideas, concepts, methods and ways of acting that make an imprint on social life?
We invite sociologists from all over Sweden to engage in this timely and provocative debate at the 2020 Sociologidagarna in Stockholm. You will be notified in the autumn 2019, when the abstract submission system opens.
Keynote speakers:
Jeffrey Alexander (Yale University)
Melinda Mills (University of Oxford)
