Migrationens utbredning över hela världen väcker frågan om migranter kommer att assimilera sig i mottagarlandets livsstil? Studier av invandrare visar att invandrare vanligtvis assimilerar sig genom utbildningsnivå och ekonomisk integration. När det gäller kultur håller dock forskarna inte med och studier visar blandade resultat: vissa etniska grupper bevarar i stor utsträckning sin egen kultur, medan andra invandrare assimilerar sig i destinationslandets kultur. En central kulturell aspekt är enligt många forskare social tillit för andra personer. Social tillit betraktas av flera forskare som en central faktor för demokrati, välstånd och god offentlig förvaltning. Även om båda forskningslinjerna – om immigration och om tillit – är väletablerade, finns det dock bara ett begränsat antal studier som undersöker invandrares sociala tillit globalt. Denna artikel undersöker vilka faktorer som påverkar invandrares tillitsnivåer på global nivå. Invandrares tillitsnivå är en viktig indikator på en lyckad integration, eftersom den signalerar någon form av förståelse, acceptans och känsla av trygghet i destinationens sociala kontext. Resultaten visar att den viktigaste faktorn för immigranters tillit är destinationslandets tillitsnivå. Detta indikerar att invandrare assimilerar sig i destinationens livsstil. Dessutom ökar individuella faktorer som utbildning, förtroende för offentliga myndigheter och inkomst invandrarnas tillitsnivå, men inflytandet av individuella faktorer påverkas av religiös inriktning. Överlag påverkas muslimska och ortodoxa invandrare mindre av individuella faktorer än protestanter.
